Confidentiality & Privacy Policy

The law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission. At Gladstone Counseling Center, we protect our clients' privacy with a passion.  However, under the law there are some circumstances when privileged, confidential communication can be waived.  These circumstances include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse, for which a psychotherapist is required by law to make a report  to the appropriate authorities (police or human services) immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, a psychotherapist must notify the police and inform the intended victim of the threat.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself or attempts to do so, the psychotherapist will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not or cannot cooperate, the psychotherapist will take further measures, like contacting family members or police or emergency medical services, that are provided for by law in order to ensure their safety.
